Freedom is an inherent human right that drives the world. Every individual yearns for freedom, yet the way we interpret freedom shapes various aspects of our choices within civilization. The absurdities of the last decade in the movement of the world have led me to a paradoxical conclusion: ultimate personal freedom often comes at the expense of others' freedom. Another perspective I have explored suggests that it is not uncommon for us to live imprisoned by our internal emotional struggles. With this in mind, I directed my creative efforts toward places where freedom is categorically absent – prisons. Due to the unique nature of these institutions, it took me a long time to gain access, but my patience proved fruitful. I received permission for a year-long project at the Belene Prison, located on the small Persin Island in the Danube River. I was also granted the opportunity to meet with lifers. Initially, I felt fear. My imagination conjured images from movies – sinister faces and monstrous actions of people who had long abandoned their humanity.Imagination can be a strange thing – it creates perceptions that often have no connection to reality. When I met the inmates face to face, my preconceived notions about the "face of evil" were shattered. Through the numerous stories I heard, I realized that these people are, in many ways, just like me. Life often places us in situations where we are a step away from the unacceptable, and unfortunately, they crossed that line. I spoke with individuals whose heavy stories and fates seemed to have predestined them for a tragic outcome. In this project, I offer my eyes, using the photographs of the inmates to express my position as a creator who rejects prejudice. Societies are often ruthless; they rarely succeed in "walking in the shoes of others" or understanding those who have sinned. I made an effort to place myself in their situation, without being naively idealistic. I know that pure evil exists. But I also believe in the power of repentance and forgiveness. It is these qualities that make us human.
